PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3/29/07

Orcas Island resident Marty Mead has been selected to ride as the engineer on board the vessel Earthrace in it's attempt to break the world speed record for circumnavigating the planet, and make history for being the first vessel to go around the world using 100% biodiesel.

Earthrace began its voyage March 10th in Barbados and has transited through the Caribbean Sea and the Panama Canal. Due to unforeseen events during the voyage north up the coast of Central America, the Earthrace crew was left in need of an engineer. Marty's extensive maritime background as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Engineer and Captain combined with his experience as a biofuel entrepreneur and his commitment to biofuels made him the perfect candidate.

Marty will meet the boat in the next port of call (San Diego) before departing west across the Pacific Ocean, the longest leg of the race at nearly 2,500 miles of open ocean. Earthrace will stop to fuel only 12 times over the 24,000  nautical mile race, stopping in Hawaii - Majuro - Koror - Singapore - Cochin- Maldives -Aden- Suez - Port Said - Malaga - Canary Islands - and finishing in Barbados.

Earthrace's 78 ft hull is constructed entirely of Kevlar and carbon fiber, carries nearly 3,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel and boasts over 1,000 horsepower from its two engines.  This combination of materials and power gives the Earthrace the potential to travel non-stop for 3,000 nautical miles at speeds over 50 mph.  She is the worlds first wave piercing craft designed to fully submarine beneath huge ocean waves.  This ability allows Earthrace to cross oceans in conditions that would destroy typical ocean-going vessels and gives it an excellent chance at breaking a world record that has stood for almost 10 years.

Marty's duties on board Earthrace will consist of making sure all systems are operating correctly, and reliving the captain at the helm for this grueling non stop race. There is no pay involved for Marty or any of the crew, The race is fueled completely by donations from those of you who want to help make the difference.
